The “business end” measures an honest 8-1/2 inches long, nearly 2 inches wide and boasts an overall length of 10-3/4 inches.  It’s cut from a 3/16” thick solid sheet of steel giving it a heft in your hand that you would expect when holding a big, thick,…. bottle opener.   They’re guaranteed to get a laugh and most likely, a few shrieks!

The Birth of a Craft Beer Bottle Opener

Step #1

Each piece starts its life in our shop as a 3/16” thick steel plate (For scale: two (2) standard USA pennies stacked on top of one (1) USA quarter equals approximately 3/16”, see photo).

Step #2

A 300-pound steel plate is carefully loaded onto a state-of-the-art CNC plasma table and the rough shape is cut at temperatures approaching 40,000 degrees.

Step #3

Once the bottle opener is removed from the table, it is wire wheeled then placed in a vibratory tumbler.  For the next 10-12 hours an abrasive media will work to remove any rough edges and soften minor blemishes that are inherent in industrial steel.

Step #4

Exiting the tumbler, the bottle opener finds its way to a rubber padded vise where its tab will be hand filed to fit precisely beneath the bottle cap.

Step #5

The opener is nearly ready to begin its life of decades worth of bottle cap consumption but first, it receives an acid bath to clean any remaining mill scale followed by a final session under a 3,400-rpm wire wheel.

Step #6

The opener is placed on the anvil and your initials (or two initials of your choice) are stamped into the flat side of the tab.

Step #7

A 3,600-degree torch flame is used to ensure your bottle opener has a personality all its own.  Blues, purple, black and straw colors appear from the steel as it is heated.  No two openers ever appear the same.

Step #8

Once the steel cools to approximately 500 degrees a special blend of natural bees’ wax is hand applied to protect the finish.

Step #9

The final step is testing the fit to ensure that it operates as it should. It’s smooth to the touch.  Strong with a heft that feels good in the hand and ready to provide years of service.

Life for this opener begins when it is neatly packed in a box and shipped to you

Color: Raw steel with hand rubbed wax finish. Due to the nature of mild steel, no two bottle openers will ever appear the same guaranteeing a truly one of a kind gift.  Minor variations may occur between the items pictured and the item you receive. 

Maintenance: Please note that prolonged exposure to moisture will cause it to rust. The surface rust is easily removed with steel wool or a fine grade sanding sponge followed by a fresh coat of wax.

Customization:
We will custom hand stamp the initials of your choice on the flat side of the tab. Initials are limited to two (2) characters.

Please note that all initials are stamped by hand. The letters may not be perfectly aligned and show some slight variations in depth and spacing. No two pieces will ever appear the same guaranteeing that you will receive a one of a kind item.
